Last month (November 6, 2013), Office Interiors hosted four grade nine students who participated in The Learning Partnerships` nineteenth annual Bring Your Kids To Work Day.
The four were joining more than 250,000 grade nine students across Canada who experienced a day in the life of an adult – at work.
Our intrepid ‘newbies’ had a light breakfast while chatting about the plan for the day, and then were given a brief overview of entrepreneurialism and business by Office Interiors’ President & CEO, Jim Mills.
After a safety orientation the four were given a tour of the facility, and then they were introduced to – and provided with a summary of – a few of the various roles that our employees perform. The presenters – in turn – described the educational and professional path they traveled to arrive at their current role at Office Interiors, and then answered a myriad of questions about their chosen career and career path.
After a bite to eat at a local establishment, the grade nine students spent some time learning about resume writing and job interviews, along with hearing about some real-life examples of the ‘dos’ and ‘don’ts’ when meeting face-to-face with potential employers.
The remainder of the afternoon was spent job-shadowing their parents. Through the program, the fourteen-year-olds got a better understanding of the importance of staying in school and continuous learning, obtained an appreciation of various careers and the many career choices are available to them.
